MUBI is a streaming service that is available to viewers in 195 countries worldwide. In addition, the company produces films and also serves as a film distributor.
The streamer handpicks and carefully curates their lineup of films, giving viewers one new film every day. They also have a library of over 400 films viewers can watch. However, film availability differs depending on which country you’re in because of film rights.
Selections include art-house films, documentary and independent films, contemporary award winners, their favorite Hollywood classics and MUBI’s own releases.
The MUBI streaming service is available as an app on many devices including Roku, FireTV, AppleTV, some smart TVs, and on iOS and Android devices.
You can also stream MUBI with a subscription to Amazon Prime Video or through their official website in your desktop browser.
MUBI offers a 7-day free trial so you can enjoy their movies, including the daily selections. Students can get an even longer free trial of 30 days and a lower pricing.
In this article, I will explain how to get started with a MUBI free trial, and also what the service offers.

You can get started with MUBI in a few main ways. These include downloading and installing the app for your device, signing up through their website or using a service like Amazon Prime Video to subscribe to their premium channel.
A free trial is available no matter which option you choose. In this article, I’m only going to focus on the options that allow you to watch MUBI on a desktop device.
Below, I’m going to outline the process or starting a free trial on each of the above-mentioned platforms so that you can see how easy it is to get started and what is involved.

Probably the best way to subscribe to MUBI is through their official website. There are several benefits to doing so.
- Only one subscription to worry about.
- Use your login credentials with their official apps.
- Stream via any browser on desktop or mobile.
- Get a student discount and longer free trial if you qualify.

To get started, you can go to your localized website at mubi.com. When you join through my link, you’ll see that instead of a 7-day free trial, you get a full 30-day free trial.
If you’re a student, you can also navigate to this page where they offer a full 30-day free trial. You’ll have to prove that you’re a student.
The first step is to enter your email address and click on the “Get Started” button. Then follow the instructions below.
1. Choose a MUBI plan
The first step is to choose a MUBI plan to start your free trial. There are two plans to choose from with 1 difference. This difference can help you decide which MUBI plan to choose.
MUBI Go is an additional service offered where they send you a cinema ticket for one of their hand-picked films every single week, in addition to all the benefits you get from MUBI’s core plan.
If you don’t plan to watch any movies in the cinema, then you can just stick with MUBI.
In this step, you can also choose the yearly plan which gives you a 40% savings compared to paying month-to-month for an entire year.
When you’ve decided on a plan, you can click on the ‘Next’ button to continue. Note that the MUBI Go plan is selected by default so you’ll have to change it before continuing or you may end up paying $17.99 after your free trial ends.
2. Enter your billing details
After choosing your MUBI plan, you’ll need to enter your credit card details to start your MUBI free trial membership.
Alternatively, you can use your PayPal account. MUBI doesn’t charge you immediately when you start your free trial. You will be charged at the end of your 7-day trial period and can cancel at any time.
Once your billing is accepted, you’ll be shown a confirmation and you’ll see when your trial ends. You can then click on the “Start Watching” button to begin your trial.
3. Check your email
You can start browsing MUBI and watching immediately if you like but you’ll also need to check your email to complete a few important steps.
- Set your password
- Activate your account
When you set your password, you will automatically activate your account so you don’t need to do both. If you activate your account using the link, you’ll need to set your password.
MUBI also sends an email to confirm that your free trial has started. This happens right after your billing is accepted. The email will contain a film suggestion that you can start watching.

How Much Does MUBI Cost After the Free Trial?
MUBI is available worldwide so pricing will differ from country to country.
In the United States, it depends on where you get the MUBI free trial. On the MUBI official website, MUBI is $14.99/month. With this price, you get to watch as much as you want from the entire MUBI library as well as “film of the day”. Also included in your membership is the Notebook publication for film buffs.
MUBI Go is another option for $19.99. It includes everything you get with MUBI, plus a free ticket to see their film of the week in a movie theater near you.
If you take the MUBI free trial on Amazon Prime Video, the price is $10.99/month. You wouldn’t get Notebook and other benefits of MUBI from the website.
Students can get access to MUBI for $9.99/month with a 30-day free trial. But only from the MUBI website.
There is also an option to pay for MUBI on a yearly basis that will save you 40% of what you would pay month-to-month for an entire year.

You can get up to 14 days of free trials by taking both the website trial and the Amazon Prime Video free trial.
What’s Showing On MUBI?
MUBI isn’t a Netflix-type streaming service where you’ll find something for everyone. It appeals to a very specific type of user.
The streaming service shows art-house, indie and documentary films, along with contemporary Award winners and film festival favorite. You’ll also find their favorite Hollywood classics and foreign films. Added to that, MUBI also releases their own films that you can find exclusively on their streaming service.
Each film is carefully hand-picked and curated. You’ll find collections with films that have something in common, maybe films by a particular director or films that won an award at a specific film festival.
Film on MUBI vary from country to country because of film rights so you wouldn’t have the same library or new selections in the United States as you would have in France or Australia.
When browsing MUBI, you’ll be able to quickly see film titles along with the director’s name, the country of origin and year of release.
Releases on MUBI can be very hard to find on any other streaming service, so this is one of the biggest pros about being a member.
Here is a small selection of the films you will find on MUBI. These are all from the US library.
MUBI adds one new hand-picked film every single day as part of their carefully curated offerings. This alone may be worth the cost of the membership but only if you like these types of films.
Should You Keep MUBI After the Free Trial?
The answer to this question would depend on how much you like the selections on MUBI. If you’re a lover of foreign films or you’re a film buff who follow film festival news and releases, then MUBI may be the streaming service you’re looking for.
MUBI’s library of content is large enough to satisfy any viewer’s appetite for something to watch, and many of the films are exclusive to MUBI.
With MUBI, you can save and download film only on mobile apps for offline viewing. You can also watch hand-picked selections in theaters every week with a MUBI Go subscription. These are a few perks that might help you decide whether or not to keep the service.
You can try MUBI on their website or official apps or you can try it with an Amazon Prime Video subscription. Its cheaper on Amazon but you wouldn’t get all of the same perks.
