Prime Video is Amazon’s video streaming service, available on the web and on various platforms such as the company’s own FireTV, Roku, Apple TV, various smart TVs, gaming consoles and more.
The streaming service offers a lot of content from Amazon Original programming, which includes TV shows and movies, to blockbuster Hollywood movies, popular TV shows and sports.
You can either purchase Prime Video by itself or if you have Amazon Prime, the subscription service that gives you benefits such as free, faster delivery, exclusive deals and more, then it’s included.
While Prime Video is available almost everywhere worldwide with the exception of a handful of countries, the content varies because of film licensing.
Amazon Channels are also available as a part of the service which gives users an easy way to subscribe to streaming channels like Paramount+, Max, Starz, Cinemax, Shudder and more.
The pricing of Amazon Prime Video may vary depending on your location on the globe but US customers pay $8.99 per month plus taxes. A better option would be to pay $14.99 per month for Prime and enjoy all the additional benefits.
Amazon Prime Video offers a free trial to get started. When you sign up via the Amazon website, you get a full 30 days to watch all Prime Video content free.
I’m not sure if it’s because of my location but signing up via the Prime Video website only gets you a 7-day free trial so the trial length may vary depending on where you live.
You can also watch FreeVee, which is Prime Video’s ad-supported service which has movies and TV shows without the need for a subscription.
Signing up for a Prime Video Free Trial
As there are a lot of devices on which you can access Prime Video, there are a lot of different ways to sign up for a Prime Video free trial.
Many of these may send you back to the Amazon website to create or link your account and also to bill you.
You need to have your credit card issued by a US bank to enter billing information. If you already shop on Amazon then you may already have an account where your billing information is already saved.
You won’t be charged when you begin your free trial and cancellation is easy.
Here are the steps to sign up for your 30-day trial on Amazon.
1. Start signing up for Prime
No, you do not need an entire Prime membership to get Prime Video but stick with me here.
In order to sign up for Prime Video without getting Prime, you need to start by signing up for Prime. In a later step, I’ll show you how to get Prime Video only.
You could sign up for Prime also and get even more benefits included other than watching all the movies and television you want.
You will need to be logged into your Amazon account or create one if you don’t already have one.
2. Select a payment method
Add a credit card to your account if you haven’t or select one of the relevant payment methods to continue.
To subscribe to Prime Video, you must have a credit or debit card issued by a US bank with a US billing address.
3. Confirm your details
On the confirmation page, you’ll see that you’re signing up for Prime as well as your payment method and billing address.
Here, you’re ready to change your membership to Prime Video only. If you want to keep Prime, you’ll still get access to Prime Video and other benefits including free two-day delivery on millions of items.
If you choose to continue with Prime, don’t change anything, just click the continue button at the bottom.
However, if you want just Prime Video only, click on the “Change” button.
4. Change your subscription to Prime Video
This is where you can compare the benefits of just having Prime Video, having Prime, or subscribing to Prime with annual billing.
Prime with monthly billing is selected by default. Click on Prime Video at the top to change your plan then click on Continue at the bottom.
5. Confirm details
You’ll be taken back to the screen where you confirmed your details as shown in step 3.
Here, you’ll see that you’re now confirming that you’re signing up for Prime Video instead of Prime.
Click the “Start your free trial” button at the bottom and you’re ready to start streaming all the latest Prime Video content as well as adding free trials for available Amazon channels.
Signing Up for Prime Video Outside US
If you’re outside of the United States, you’ll be directed to sign up for Prime Video on a dedicated website at PrimeVideo.com.
The process for signup is the same as outlined above after you click on the “Start your free trial” button.
Here though, you only have a 7-day free trial and you can sign in through this website to access your library which contains only some of the content that is licensed for viewing in your area as well as Amazon originals.
Should You Keep Your Prime Video Subscription?
Should you keep your Prime Video subscription after your free trial ends?
This is a great question and it’s hard to see why not. Prime Video as well as the channels available to subscribe to, has almost any movie you can think of available to stream for free with your membership, rent or buy.
Many of the latest movies from 2024 are available while you have to wait for them on more popular streaming sites like Netflix.
Think of a movie you want to see and search for it on Prime Video. You have a good chance of finding it available in their library or on one of the channels.
Amazon also has a whole lot of original programming that is free to stream with a Prime Video membership.
Space Cadet, for example, is a new romatic-comedy movie being released in July 2024 along with Tyler Perry’s Divorce In the Black.
Other great originals not available anywhere else include Coming 2 America, the sequel to Eddie Murphy’s much-loved 1988 comedy, the Michael B. Jordan action-thriller Without Remorse, and hit series like The Boys and The Man in the High Castle.
Having a Prime Video subscription will also allow you to subscribe to Amazon Channels including:
In addition to Prime Video’s 30-day free trial, almost every Amazon channel has a 7-day free trial so you can try them out without limitation or expense.
